2004 Sage Vineyards Cabernet

2004 Sage Cabernet Review

The best new wine that I tasted in March 2008 hands down is the 2004 Sage Vineyards Cabernet.  This was a wine recommended by my friend Jessica Burch at Prima Wines and she was right on the mark again.   If you are not on the Prima Wines mailing list, you are in the dark.  Check out my top wine retailer list.

The 2004 Sage is silky smooth and has a sweet and sexy bouquet. When I first tasted his wine I knew that there had to be a  unique story behind the wine.  Wines this luxuriously smooth don't come that often and the 2004 Sage Cabernet caught the attention of my palette.  I immediately regretted only purchasing a few bottles of the Sage.

The 2004 Sage Cabernet could be served at a party with almost universal appeal.   It has lovely sweet Cabernet fruit and a perfect finish for a young wine,  The tannins are there so I have no doubt that this wine will age gracefully but the balance is impeccable.  This is as good as the best of Colgin Herb Lamb back in the early 90's when you could afford to enjoy the wine on release and every year afterwards.

I had to get some more information about the project so I called Alan Peirson the General Manager at Sage.  Alan worked for 20 years at the Peter Michael Winery and was lured away to this exciting new project by owners Brian Malk and Bob Nugent.  I do not think Bob is related to 60's Superstar Ted Nugent but anytime I see that name I think of Rock & Roll.

According to Alan, the 2004 Sage Cabernet is the first vintage that the winery project has released.  The 2005 vintage will be released next month and I recommend that you use the form below to get on their mailing list.

Alan briefly reviewed the winery project history and what stuck out the most was their focus on vineyard management and canopy techniques.  The vines are meticulously hand trained and tied to the trellises to allow each vine and shoot to have maximum sun exposure.  There are no sloppy canopy systems at Sage Vineyards.

2004 Sage Cabernet Review

I have not visited Sage Vineyards but it will be on my list this summer when I visit Napa again.  This wine is just fantastic and as soon as you taste this wine you will know that it is special.  That is a true distinction for me since I have tasted so many great wines from California.  This is one of the best Mount Veeder wines that I have tasted so congratulations to the team at Sage Vineyards.

I rate the 2004 Sage Vineyards Cabernet 94 points and a must buy for any serious collector.  There are only a few cases of the 2004 left and the 2005 will be released shortly. I strongly recommend that you sign up for Sage Vineyards mailing list using the special form below. Since supplies are limited, your request will arrive as a VIP request into the winery and get immediate attention.
